Per Diem Facts

Per diem is a tax break to assist U.S. residents unable to find work in their area. To qualify, a consultant must maintain a residence more than 100 miles from the work site and be fiscally responsible for the residence.

AESI handles per diem on an hourly basis, up to 40 hours/week. For example, in Santa Clara County, the per diem is approximately $27/hour for 40 hours/week. A consultant earning $50/hour would only be taxed on $23/hour for the first 40 hours/week; $27/hour would be untaxed. For time beyond 40 hours/week, the full $50/hour would be taxed.

AESI’s method for managing per diem, is designed to limit the consultant’s exposure and maximize the benefit to the consultant. For further details about per diem rates, see the U.S. Government’s web site for Travel Management Policy at http://policyworks.gov.

Resumes: The First Impression is a Lasting Impression

Hiring managers receive stacks of resumes on a daily basis. Getting your resume to rise to the top is vital to reaching the next stage interviewing. Even if you have the finest credentials, a poorly presented resume will get passed over. Here are some tips for getting your resume noticed.

General Resume Tips

  • Write an objective statement targeted towards the job you are applying for.
  • List a summary of your skills, briefly describing how each was used. A hiring manager will decide within the first few lines to read on.
  • Use achievement statements with active words such as: developed, implemented, managed, etc. Include the tools or skills used.
  • Use bulleted lists for a quick read.
  • If your employment history consists of many contract positions, use month and year for employment dates. This shows the manager there are no unexplained gaps.
  • As long as the resume has substance, the length is not limited to one page.
  • Include a footer on each page with your name and page x of y.
  • Remove Hobbies/Activities.
  • ALWAYS use spell check.

Electronic Resumes

  • Resumes should be attached in ASCII text format or in the body of the email message.
  • Avoid using bullets, tabs, underlining, text alignment, special fonts, bold or italicized text, different sizes of text, and other special characters.
  • Limit each line to 60 characters. Enter at the end of each line. Wrapping will not work in ASCII format.

AESI Resume Submittal

  • The most efficient method for submitting resumes to AESI is via email with a Word attachment.
  • Save the Word file in rich text format (RTF).
  • HTML resumes are not preferred.
  • Keep it simple when formatting the document.
